New Fund Launches to Help Care for Yukoners Fighting Cancer

Whitehorse, Yukon – A newly established fund to support Yukoners fighting cancer and their families, who help to care for them, will launch at a reception in Whitehorse on Thursday, May 2 in the Yukon Government Main Administration Building Foyer.

The Yukoners Cancer Care Fund is a community initiative, championed by Yukon College Chancellor, former Yukon Commissioner and long-time Canadian Cancer Society volunteer Geraldine Van Bibber and will be administered by the Yukon Hospital Foundation.

“We are committed to supporting Yukoners who are fighting this terrible disease with an approach that reflects our incredibly giving community and allows each and every dollar we raise to stay right here in the territory,” said Van Bibber.

The Honourable David Laxton, Speaker of the Yukon Legislative Assembly and the MLA for Porter Creek Centre, will host the reception to raise awareness and funds and he and his office aim to make this an annual event.

“In our lives, we are all touched by someone we care about who is fighting cancer,” said Laxton. “I am honoured to work with Geraldine Van Bibber, Yukon College and the Yukon Hospital Foundation to host this event and help raise awareness and of course dollars for this very important fund.”

The Yukoners Cancer Care Fund reception will commence at 5:30 pm and will feature live music, appetizers and a live auction.

Admission is by donation and charitable receipts will be issued. Everyone is welcome and proceeds will benefit the Yukoners Cancer Care Fund.
