On June 6, 2013, author Claire Festel, in alliance with artist Valerie Hodgson, collaborators of the book Remarkable Yukon Women (Harbour Publishing, 2011), will be presenting the Yukon Hospital Foundation with a donation to Karen’s Fund to honour the connection between Yukon women and their community.
Remarkable Yukon Women, profiles by Claire Festel and portraits by Valerie Hodgson, presents the stories and faces of 50 Yukon women. Their stories paint a picture of what life was—and is—really like for Yukon women. The donation is equivalent to $1.00 for every copy of the book sold in the first year of its publication, a total of $1618.00. The event is open to the public and the women featured in the book are invited to attend.
Remarkable Yukon Women Tea
2:00 pm, June 6, 2013
Fireside Room in the Thompson Centre
Attached to Whitehorse General Hospital
The donation is particularly significant to Claire because she was diagnosed with breast cancer just months after the launch of the Remarkable Yukon Women in 2011. She has since undergone surgery for breast and colon cancers and is commencing a second round of chemotherapy treatment for multiple myeloma, a rare bone marrow cancer.
The Karen J. Wiederkehr Memorial Fund was created in October 2000 in memory of Karen, who died of breast cancer at the age of 37 following months of medical appointments, hospitalizations, surgeries, radiation and chemotherapy. Karen was the inspiration behind Karen’s Room, the chemotherapy suite at the Whitehorse General Hospital, which offers chemo patients and their families a quiet, comfortable dedicated place for chemo treatments. Karen’s Fund also provides financial assistance to women who are experiencing financial demands while undergoing treatment for breast cancer.
Admission to the tea is free, and the event is supported by the Yukon Hospital Foundation and Harbour Publishing.
