Reception Raises over $18,000 for Yukoners Cancer Care Fund
May 13, 2016
Whitehorse, Yukon – More than $18,000 was raised in support of the Yukoners Cancer Care Fund at a reception hosted by the Honorable David Laxton, Speaker of the Yukon Legislative Assembly and the MLA for Porter Creek Centre. The reception, held on April 28th, was in partnership with Yukon College and the Yukon Hospital Foundation.
The Yukoners Cancer Care Fund was established in 2013 to support Yukoners and their families facing cancer. Aside from the physical, mental and emotional effects of cancer, there are significant financial stresses that come along with a cancer diagnosis. This fund is 100 per cent donor-funded. Consequently, none of this support would be available without the generosity of our community. Since its inception, over 20 families have received funds, allowing them to focus on their health, and reduce some financial burden during treatment.
The fund is administered by the Yukon Hospital Foundation with the support of medical staff and social workers who have frontline contact with patients and their families.
The Yukon Hospital Foundation would like to thank Speaker Laxton for his generosity and personal commitment to the Yukoners Cancer Care Fund, and everyone that so generously donated to the live and silent auctions, at the door, and the many who volunteered their time.
With more than 130 new cancer diagnoses in the Yukon each year, the need for support continues to grow.
Donations to the Yukoners Cancer Care Fund can be made through the Yukon Hospital Foundation at 5 Hospital Road, http://www.yhf.ca/giving.
